Body Fat Transfer

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a common procedure, performed by a cosmetic surgeon. The procedure involves taking fat from one area of the body and transferring it to another area. Fat transfer is used extensively by plastic surgeons, and the procedure also shows promise for wound healing and minimizing the appearance of scar tissue.

The goals of fat transfer

The fat transfer process accomplishes two goals, which are:

  • Removing fat from one problem area of the body, providing a slimmer, more aesthetically pleasing shape to the area
  • Using the fat to enhance and add volume to another area of the body which requires more definition and contouring

How fat transfer is performed

Liposuction is used to remove fat from a problem area of your body. Problem areas which are commonly used as donor sites may include the hips, abdomen, or thighs. The fat is then processed to purify it. The purified fat is reinjected into the area which needs enhancement and volume.

Body areas which can benefit from fat transfer

The purified fat may be used to enhance many areas of your body, including:

  • Buttocks, by adding shape and fullness to flat buttocks
  • Breasts, by adding volume and shape, to prevent sagging
  • Face, by filling in lines and crevices, or giving shape to the chin and cheekbones
  • Hips, by enhancing the curvature and contours of the hip area

Fat transfer has also been documented to help with wound healing, scars, and the appearance of the breasts following radiation treatment.

The benefits of fat transfer

Fat transfer results can last a lifetime, but you may need additional treatments to maintain your results. The fat transfer process is also relatively pain-free and requires little to no downtime.
